Vision Redbridge Culture & Leisure will begin a month-long celebration for Black History starting with a Black Brits African & Caribbean Community Fair this October. The national celebration aims to recognise Black contributions to society and to foster an understanding of Black history in general.
Families are invited to attend the community fair taking place at Redbridge Central Library on Sundays 3 and 17 October. The fair, which has an admission cost of just £1, will be celebrating Black culture with a variety of stalls. A marketplace will be set up throughout the library for visitors to explore. We are thrilled to feature many local black owned businesses, with a vast range of goods available to buy and explore including music, arts and crafts, health and beauty products, fashion, jewellery and traditional African and Caribbean food. There will also be stalls providing information on health and wellbeing including blood pressure checks.
Visitors that are starting their own journey into business can benefit from a range of seminars that will be taking place on the second floor in Hub Central, our business and employment skills hub, including starting up and sustaining a business; accounting and taxes; branding and marketing; loans; grants and investments; and time and money management. Seminars will cover topics such as ‘How to become an Entrepreneur’ by Dr Dwain A. Neil OBE, FRSA, Chairman of The Reach Society and ‘Wills & Probate’ by Honey Legal.
Catherine Rowan, Vice-Chair of Trustees for Vision said:
”Black History Month is celebrated annually across the UK during the month of October, and every year residents of Redbridge can enjoy a host of events and activities that take place across our venues to celebrate and showcase the rich and diverse cultural heritage of our incredible Black communities.”
Cllr Kam Rai, Deputy Leader of Redbridge Council said:
“Redbridge is one of the most diverse boroughs in London, which has shaped our unique character and special sense of community. Black History Month is a time to share, celebrate and reflect on our long and rich Black history in Redbridge, telling the stories that have shaped our Black communities and the borough itself. I’m delighted that, through the hard work of so many groups and individuals passionate about Black history, we are able to offer such a varied and exciting programme of events.”
During the month residents can enjoy various talks from historians and authors; reading groups focusing on Black writers; fun themed workshops for adults and children including Pop ‘n’ Paint workshops, which fuses together art, music and games; educational videos created by Redbridge Museum and Heritage Centre; a comedy show at Kenneth More Theatre and much more.
