Experience Sight Loss Through Virtual Reality

Monday June 1, 2026
11:00 AM - 1:00 PM

As part of HiVis Fortnight, join us for a unique Virtual Reality experience exploring what it means to live with sight loss. HiVis is a national campaign celebrating accessible libraries and raising awareness of the services and support available for people with visual impairments.

This relaxed, drop-in session invites you to try one or both immersive VR experiences, offering powerful and thought-provoking perspectives on vision and perception.

Notes on Blindness is an award-winning immersive experience based on the real audio diaries of writer John Hull, who gradually lost his sight. Through sound, atmosphere, and minimal visuals, this experience takes you on a sensory and emotional journey into a world beyond sight, exploring how perception changes when vision is lost.

In the Visual Impairment Experience, you can choose from a range of simulated conditions, including partial sight, blindness, and colour blindness. You’ll be challenged to carry out everyday tasks—such as crossing a road, using an ATM, or finding items in a shop—offering insight into the practical challenges people with sight loss may face.

Please note: The full Notes on Blindness experience lasts around 45 minutes, but you are welcome to stop at any time. The Visual Impairment Experience does not have a fixed ending—you can try one or more scenarios at your own pace.
