Britain now has a strong record for equality; however this has not always been the case. Until 1967, same sex sexual activity was illegal and many people were imprisoned, ostracised and faced intense discrimination due to their sexual preferences. Despite the legalisation of homosexual acts in 1967, the battle for equality was only just beginning…and continues today.

Redbridge Rainbow Community, in partnership with Eastside Community Heritage, embarked on a project to document the experiences of Redbridge’s LGBT+ community on the road to equality. This exhibition tells these powerful personal stories and anecdotes of the campaigns for equality in the LGBT+ community from Redbridge, leading to the 2004 Civil Partnership Act and of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013. This exhibition can be viewed at the following dates and times:

1-6 February Fullwell Cross Library
8-13 February Goodmayes Library
15-20 February South Woodford Library & Gym
22-27 February Wanstead Library

Section 28 Exhibition

Courtesy of Eastside Heritage Community, this exhibition explores the effects of the controversial Section 28 law and celebrates the activists who eventually brought it down. Enacted in 1988 Section 28 made it illegal for local authorities and schools to “intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality”. Thatcher’s law was met with uproar from LGBT+ activists, and after two decades of protesting the law was finally repealed in 2003. This exhibition can be viewed at the following dates and times:

3-8 February Wanstead Library
12-18 February Fullwell Cross Library
20-28 February Goodmayes Library

These Exhibitions are brought to you by Eastside Community Heritage in partnership with Redbridge Rainbow Community. Please note: Dates are flexible, check with the relevant library before visiting.

Throughout the month of February there will be a special LGBT film screening, reading group, and coffee morning plus workshops for LGBTQ writers with Olumide Popoola and Elizabeth Lovatt, exhibitions, a comedy evening featuring Mark Burkwood and also to mention our family favourite Mama G returns will be sharing tales that celebrate who you are and loving who you want.
