On Thursday 23 April, the Hainault community came together for a vibrant and fun-filled family celebration at Hainault Library, delivered in association with the Hainault Community Association. The event brought residents of all ages together in a warm display of local pride, culture and connection.
The Mayor of Redbridge welcomed everyone to the event and highlighted the activities planned throughout the afternoon. A special highlight of the day was a visit from Doreen Golding, a celebrated London Pearly Queen and recipient of the British Empire Medal (BEM), who delighted attendees in her iconic pearl-buttoned costume while embodying London’s rich working-class heritage and spirit of generosity.
Families were entertained by a classic Punch and Judy show, which brought laughter to children and adults alike with its timeless slapstick humour. Adding to the excitement was the impressive Musical Dragon installation – a beautifully crafted wooden creation that invited visitors to turn handles and bring “George the Dragon” to life. The 12-foot spectacle played music, blew bubbles and showcased the creativity of mechanical engineering, sparking smiles and curiosity throughout the afternoon.
The celebration also featured a lively performance from the Blackhorse and Standard Women’s North West Morris Dancers. Founded in Walthamstow in the early 1980s, the group impressed the crowd with their energetic clog dancing, colourful costumes and traditional routines.
Alongside the performances, families enjoyed a range of free activities including arts and crafts, mini face painting and balloon modelling, creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for everyone.
The event also marked World Book Night, with a free book giveaway encouraging residents to discover the joy of reading. Visitors were invited to join the library and gain access to thousands of books, supporting learning, wellbeing and imagination across the community.
Throughout the afternoon, residents shared overwhelmingly positive feedback about the event. Many expressed how meaningful it was to celebrate their local area together, with comments highlighting a strengthened sense of belonging, connection and appreciation of English culture.
The celebration proved to be a fantastic success, bringing people together through tradition, creativity and community spirit, and leaving lasting memories for all who attended.
