Redbridge Creates are bringing their touring show, Playing With Fire, to Redbridge classrooms again this June. The forty-minute theatre production uses two professional actors and explores issues around children’s use of social media and mobile phones. The performance and the post-show discussion brings focus to the detrimental effects and emotional consequences of being on your phone.
Some of the issues that are represented in the show are:
- Negative effects on lifestyle, relationships and mental health
- Cyber bullying and trolling
- Sexting – receiving or sending sexualised images (age-appropriate examples used only)
- Online grooming
- Social media and the law
- Positive aspects of social media
Aimed at children in Year 5 and above this is the perfect representation of the effects of social media and the impact it can have on people. Some of the things that the students will see represented in the performance include the use of apps such as YouTube, TikTok and WhatsApp and will address situations like being unable to detach from your phone, exclusion and malicious behaviour in group chats, and keeping safe online.
Growing up surrounded by social media is the reality young people today have to face and there isn’t always a lot of helpful information about how to manage it and use it safely. Playing With Fire aims to bring awareness and education to young people in an age-appropriate way.
