As part of Loved and Wanted, The Quilt of Welcome will be touring libraries in London, coming to Redbridge Libraries from Monday 22 June to Saturday 25 July.
The Quilt of Welcome has been created by hundreds of children in Sheffield, across 18 schools and three hospital settings. Writing words in their home, heritage, or community language, they share what makes them feel happy, welcome, and safe. As you explore the quilt, you will spot hobbies, family members and friends, as well as words that hint at difficult pasts and experiences. The quilt has 396 squares and was stitched together (quilted) – by hand – by over 100 volunteers.
Loved and Wanted is a campaign from the Mayor of London, funded through The National Lottery Community Fund, that reaffirms to Londoners that everyone is loved and wanted in our city. It is part of the Mayor’s work to strengthen connections between London’s communities and celebrate diversity.
The project forms part of the work of Sabine Little, Professor of Literacy and Multilingualism at the University of Sheffield and artist/storyteller, whose work focuses on the links between multilingualism, identity, and belonging.
