South Woodford Library and Gym preparing to reopen its doors, a fresh new look for the local community.
Following the closure for RAAC removal works, we are delighted to announce its reopening following an exciting transformation, featuring an extensive range of brand-new fitness equipment supplied by Matrix, refurbished facilities and furnishings throughout the library and gym areas.
The newly refreshed gym and studio has been designed to create a modern, welcoming and inspiring environment for the whole community, whether you are taking your first steps into a healthy lifestyle, returning after a break, or looking to take your training to the next level.
At the heart of the refurbishment is a comprehensive new gym floor, featuring dedicated training zones designed to support a wide range of health goals and abilities.
The dedicated Strength Zone provides an extensive selection of equipment for members looking to build strength, improve muscle tone and develop their overall fitness. Alongside this, the new Functional Fitness Zone offers space and equipment for dynamic, full-body workouts, helping members improve strength, mobility, balance, coordination and everyday movement.
For those looking to improve cardiovascular fitness, the dedicated CV Zone features a wide range of modern Matrix cardio equipment, providing members with plenty of choice for walking, running, cycling, rowing and other forms of cardiovascular training.
The new gym has been carefully planned to make fitness accessible to all ages and abilities. From beginners who may be unfamiliar with gym equipment to experienced members looking for more challenging workouts, there is something for everyone.
The library space has benefited from redecoration, new study spaces and furnishings throughout. There has also been investment in the library book stock, giving access to a range of new titles and old favourites.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome our members and residents back to South Woodford Library & Gym and to introduce them to the fantastic new facilities. This investment by Redbridge Council and Vision represents a major step forward for the centre and creates a gym environment that is modern, inviting and accessible to everyone. Whether you are starting your fitness journey, returning to exercise or working towards a specific goal, our new facilities are here to support you.”
Councillor Kam Rai, Leader of Redbridge Council said:
“Closing South Woodford Library and Gym due to RAAC was not a decision we took lightly, but protecting residents had to come first. We always said we wanted to see these facilities reopen, and I’m delighted that we will soon be able to welcome people back to a safer, refurbished building. Libraries and community leisure facilities are vital local assets, and this investment ensures residents can continue to access the services, activities and opportunities they provide for many years to come. This marks another of our reopenings as we work hard to complete all the leisure projects we’ve invested in. The Kenneth More Theatre will reopen in December, with Fullwell Cross Leisure Centre next in line.”
The reopening is an opportunity for existing members to rediscover their local fitness facility, while welcoming new members from across the South Woodford community and surrounding areas.
With dedicated training zones, new furnishings and upgraded facilities, South Woodford Library & Gym offers a fresh, contemporary environment designed to help the community move more, feel better and achieve their learning, wellbeing and fitness goals.
Whether you want to get fitter, build strength, improve your health, read more, find information or take part in an activity, there’s something for everyone. We invite the local community to come and discover the refurbished library and gym for themselves.
Be the first to hear when we’re ready to welcome you back.
