August 2025 • Vision RCL

Ilford is set to welcome an exciting new addition to its fitness landscape with the launch of Serenity Ilford, a brand-new women-only gym.

Operated and managed by Vision RCL, this bespoke facility will be created through the refurbishment and conversion of unused space at Mildmay House, Mildmay Road, offering a welcoming environment dedicated exclusively to women’s health, fitness, and wellbeing.

Responding to the growing demand for female-only fitness spaces, Serenity Ilford aims to provide a safe and inclusive setting where women of all backgrounds and fitness levels can feel comfortable and empowered to achieve their goals in a supportive environment.

The new gym will feature:

  • State-of-the-Art Equipment – A fully equipped gym floor with modern cardio and strength-training equipment suitable for all fitness levels
  • Fitness & Wellbeing Classes – Including yoga, Pilates, HIIT, and holistic wellbeing sessions designed to promote physical and mental health
  • Supportive Community: A vibrant, inclusive space where you can connect, share your journey, and celebrate progress together.
  • Beauty Treatments – On-site services including facials, massages, manicures, pedicures, and other treatments to support self-care and relaxation

Building on the success of women-only sessions at Loxford and Mayfield Leisure Centres, this dedicated gym will meet the increasing demand in Ilford, where local competition currently offers limited female-only fitness opportunities.

Cllr Vanisha Solanki, Deputy Leader of Redbridge Council, recently visited the site at Mildmay Road. Cllr Solanki said: “We’re delighted to be shortly opening a new facility for women in the heart of Ilford, where they can escape the pressures of modern life by taking part in a range of fitness and wellbeing classes. Serenity Ilford is a safe, supportive, and empowering space for women to exercise, relax, and thrive.

“We recognise that this is a market we need to tap into, and that’s why we’re providing this space where women can enjoy their leisure time in a safe and calm environment. We look forward to Serenity Ilford opening its doors to members this Autumn.”

Linda Perham, Chair of Vision RCL’s Leisure and Parks Committee, added: “We are thrilled to announce the launch of Serenity Ilford, which reflects our continued commitment to improving access to inclusive and supportive health and wellbeing facilities.

“There is a clear and growing demand for female-only fitness spaces, and this initiative not only meets that demand but also empowers women in our community to prioritise their physical and mental wellbeing. We believe this gym will become a valued destination for women across Redbridge who are looking for a space that truly supports their health journey.”

The new facility is set to open in the Autumn. Membership will start at just £45 per month, making it an affordable choice for all, with concessionary rates available.

Women interested in joining can register their interest here to be among the first to sign up.

Giant creatures, sunset food sharing on rooftops and glittering trucks await to transport East London’s Borough of Redbridge to another world this autumn, with free activities for everyone to enjoy.

You’re invited to be transported into a world of new experiences as part of the Colours of Redbridge ‘Other Worlds’ programme this August and September.

The programme launches at the end of August with ‘Big Small Wonders’, a spectacular street parade featuring giant creatures inspired by land and sea made by Emergency Exit Arts and Kinetika, choreographed by co-founder of STOMP, Carl Smith.

Inspired by sunset food sharing, such as Iftars, picnics and block parties, ‘The Golden Hour’ will celebrate unique and untold stories about local foods and cultures from the rooftop of the Exchange Shopping Centre. The project is directed by Punchdrunk-collaborator Mia Jerome, fresh from her recent collaboration with Sir Lenny Henry, and the delicious menu has been curated by Hackney School of Food.

The season finishes with the world’s first touring electric ‘Truck Art’, designed by residents of Redbridge with London artists and Pakistani-based artisans on the theme of ‘Home Away From Home’. The truck features hand-painted panels from Islamabad artist Abid Bhai and sculpted to life by Redbridge-born blacksmith, Felicity Jones. The moving masterpiece will feature alongside an array of fantastic craft workshops and south Asian musical and dance performances.

This year’s ‘Other Worlds’ programme begins on Saturday 30 August with the ‘Big Small Wonders’ parade through Valentines Park and Ilford High Street. This is followed by the ‘Golden Hour’ immersive dining experience which starts on Friday 5 September at the Ilford Exchange. The season finishes with ‘Home Away From Home’, a touring Truck Art showcase, which begins on Saturday 27 September at Hainault Forest Visitor’s Centre.

All events are free to attend and there are activities suitable for all ages, interests and accessibility requirements. Booking is recommended for most workshops and activities, which can be done online or over the phone, although there will also be some spaces for people to turn up on the day.

Community Producer, Val Simpson said: “The Big Small Wonders parade has given me a real sense of purpose and of community. The local residents have helped to create something fantastic, inclusive and unlike anything you have ever seen before. We hope to see you there!”

Local Blacksmith, Felicity Jones said: “Creating the truck has been such a beautiful project to be part of and an incredible opportunity to build something bold and unique that truly reflects the creativity, diversity, and imagination of the community. I’ve especially loved running the community metal workshops, where participants poured their own ideas into custom panel designs. Seeing people grow in confidence and express themselves creatively through metalwork has been a real highlight. I can’t wait for people to experience the truck for themselves.”

Programme Director of Colours of Redbridge, Pete Nichols, said: “I really hope people love the events we’re putting on this year. Each project has been shaped by our community, every step of the way. Our job now is to deliver something truly transformative for people in Redbridge and do their ideas justice. All the activities are free, and I hope people come along, enjoy what they see and tell all their friends and family. This is a great opportunity to get out, have fun and connect with each other.”

About the programme:

Colours of Redbridge is a programme of community-led arts and culture in the borough of Redbridge. It is part of Creative People and Places (CPP), a national programme from Arts Council England, where local people decide what culture happens in their area.

The programme supports people who live, work or study in Redbridge develop their own creative and cultural projects for everyone to enjoy.

As well as Arts Council England, the programme is supported by the following local organisations: Friends of Loxford; Muslimah Sports Association; Ekota Academy; Age UK; SPACE Studios; Community Action Redbridge; Ilford Business Improvement District; and Vision Redbridge Culture and Leisure.

Two key community buildings have now partially reopened, allowing residents to return to group exercise classes, gym facilities, and hire spaces for events. At the same time, building work at a third site is due to begin shortly.

Previous structural inspections identified RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) in South Woodford Library, Kenneth More Theatre and Fullwell Cross Leisure Centre. RAAC is a lightweight material commonly used in construction between the 1950s and 1990s. Over time, it can deteriorate and must be replaced. As a precaution, these venues were temporarily closed to protect the safety of visitors and staff.

Fullwell Cross Leisure Centre

Key areas – including the spa, reception, and studio spaces are open—Group exercise classes are being held in Studio 1 and the Sam Ryan Studio. While the swimming pool remains closed, many sessions have been relocated to Loxford and Mayfield Leisure Centres. Class schedules can be found via the Vision RCL website.

Enhanced monitoring and signage have been installed to maintain a safe environment. Disruption is being minimised through automatic membership pauses, relocated swimming lessons, and providing members with access to other leisure facilities in the borough. Council officers are developing a comprehensive remediation plan that includes immediate repairs and long-term improvements to secure the facility’s future.

Kenneth More Theatre (KMT)

While the KMT auditorium remains out of service – temporarily halting full-scale theatrical performances such as the annual pantomime – the bars, foyers, and studio spaces are open and available for hire.

Anyone interested in hiring space for rehearsals, events, or community activities can contact the KMT team via kmt@visionrcl.org.uk or 020 8708 8800. Basic stage equipment can be included with hire, and additional technical support is available.

Redbridge Drama Centre in South Woodford is fully open for studio hire, classes and theatre shows at this time. Tickets are available to book for our Christmas Show – Wizard of Oz

South Woodford Library and Gym

Significant work has been undertaken at South Woodford Library and Gym to enable building works to commence shortly. A confirmed reopening date will be announced in due course.

Until then the gym and studio have been relocated to Redbridge Drama Centre temporarily, alongside a pop-up library offering a quick choice selection of popular books, a children’s book area, PCs and printing facilities.

Residents are also encouraged to visit the newly refurbished Woodford Green Library and Gym, which offers extended opening hours – 6am to 10pm on Mondays and Fridays, 6am to 10:30pm on Tuesdays to Thursdays and 8am to 8pm on weekends – as well as upgraded gym equipment, improved public computer access, and an inviting environment for all ages.

Cllr Namreen Chaudhry, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Communities, said:

“ We understand how important these facilities are to our residents and recognise the impact these temporary closures have caused. The good news is that a range of activities remain available at Fullwell Cross Leisure Centre, including exercise classes and the hugely popular spa facility. Kenneth More Theatre continues to operate as a hire venue, and construction will shortly begin at South Woodford Library and Gym.

“We’re committed to keeping our community updated and will share a confirmed timeline for the next phase of works as soon as possible.”
