Immerse yourself in the rich traditions of the Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday that honors and remembers loved ones who have passed away. Our event will be held at Redbridge Central Library, Clements Road, Ilford, IG1 1EA.

At the Redbridge Day of the Dead Death Cafe, you’ll have the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations about life, death, and everything in between. Share stories, memories, and thoughts with fellow attendees, fostering a sense of connection and understanding.

Whether you’re curious about the Day of the Dead traditions or simply looking for a unique experience, this event is open to anyone aged 18 and over.

Don’t miss out on this extraordinary event that celebrates life, love, and remembrance. Join us at the Redbridge Day of the Dead Death Cafe and be a part of this memorable experience! It will be a safe, confidential and supportive space to talk or just listen.

Please note that this is a discussion group and is not designed to be a counselling session. This session may not be suitable for you if you are recently bereaved or feeling vulnerable about the subject of death.

Even though this death cafe is part of a bigger festival, it will be located in a quieter part of the library to ensure conversations can take place confidentially.

About your facilitators

About The Death Positive Library – Redbridge Libraries

This cafe is hosted by Redbridge Libraries – the first Death Positive library service in the UK. We use our libraries as safe, trusted and unbiased spaces to offer a range of projects, events and resources which help break down taboos about talking about death, dying and grief.

Hasina Zaman – Bless Funerals

The session is offered in partnership with Bless Funerals and will be facilitated by Hasina Zaman, it’s founder and CEO.

Hasina’s focus is to lead funerals that are infused with compassionate care and making sure bereaved families and friends are sensitively care for and that a loved one’s contribution and characteristics are truly reflected throughout the funeral experience.

We welcome donations to help support the event.

The chronicle of the Oscars spans almost a century, marking its 95th annual ceremony this year. Despite this long legacy, the lack of representation of Black women in the list of Oscar nominees and winners is astonishing. The statistics clearly show a dearth of Black female nominees and winners over the years.

Led by special guest Gary Gibbs, this workshop is a great opportunity to learn about the history of the Black female Oscar nominees and winners from the 1930s to the present day. Gary will explore the social and cultural context around the lack of Black female Oscar nominees and winners and investigate their absence.

This is sure to be an entertaining and informative session as Gary has an encyclopedic knowledge of film that he shares in a relaxed, informal way.

Bring your lunch or a snack for this lunchtime film chat. Hot and cold drinks are provided.

Suitable for ages 18+
