Havering Music Makers presents

Made In Dagenham

Essex 1968. Like millions of other working women, each morning Rita O’Grady is just trying to get her husband out of bed, get the kids off to school and get to work at the factory on time. But life is about to change forever when it’s announced that the girls in the stitching room of Ford’s Dagenham car plant will have their pay grade dropped to ‘unskilled’. Quickly drawing on a strength she never knew she had, Rita leads her friends in a battle against the might of Ford and the corruption of the Union supposed to protect them. As the girls’ inspiring journey gets bigger than anyone could have imagined, the pressure is too much for some, but can Rita keep up the fight and the happy home she’s worked so hard for?

Join us for a reading circle with the amazing poet and writer Nikita Aashi Chadha (she/they) for South Asian Heritage Month. We’ll be exploring the concepts of space, place and belonging in three essays within Nikesh Shukla’s The Good Immigrant.

Content warning: the essays cover a breadth of topics, including but not limited to racism, casteism and discrimination.

There is no need for any preparation beforehand, as participants will be reading through the extracts together: Namaste by Nikesh Shukla, Airports and Auditions by Riz Ahmed and Perpetuating Casteism by Sarah Sahim. Nikita will then lead a facilitated discussion around each essay and its prominent themes.

The last 15 minutes of this session will be centred on freewriting. A light touch space for participants to work through any residual feelings from the session – folks can share after if they want to, but there is no pressure to.

Nikita is trained in mental health first aid and has direct lived experience of multiple mental health conditions, and being a South Asian person from the diaspora, born and raised in the UK.

Please can participants let us know of any access needs for the session when registering so that we can accommodate them.

Join us at our exclusive Makers Market featuring talented local artists and creatives showcasing and selling their unique creations, from zines and textiles to art and condiments. With such a diverse selection, there’s bound to be something for everyone to enjoy. Don’t miss out on this treasure trove of delights!

Classic Film Club: On The Town Film Screening

On the Town, New York, New York, it’s a wonderful town?

Especially when sailors Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Jules Munshin have a 24-hour shore leave to see the sights and when those sights include Ann Miller, Betty Garrett and Vera-Ellen. Co-Directed by Kelly and Stanley Donen, based on the Broadway hit and set to an Academy Award winning adaptation score, On the Town changed the landscape of movie musicals, opening filmmakers eyes to what could be done on location. And when brilliant location and studio production numbers are blended, it could be as here- ebullient, up-and-at-’em perfection. The Bronx is up and the Battery’s down, but no one can be down after going On the Town.

Classic Film Club: Seven Brides For Seven Brothers Film Screening

Things are different for the Pontipee men now that big brother Adam’s fetched a bride and brought her to their cabin. Indeed, the unwed brothers are so inspired they raid the town and carry off brides of their own! Like a favourite flannel shirt, everything fits right in this rugged whoop-for-joy directed by Stanley Donen, choreographed by Michael Kidd and featuring an exhilarating Gene dePaul/Johnny Mercer score that won an Academy Award. Jane Powell and Howard Keel star, supported by a cast of buck skinned dancers and petticoated danseuses. And what steppin’! The barn-raising sequence alone- backflipping, plank-leaping athleticism-leaves a daylong smile. Bless Yore Beautiful Hide, all you brides and brothers!
