Get a taste of India and Pakistan’s art scene without leaving Redbridge.

Famous in parts of South Asia for their bright, bold colours and witty designs, a highly-decorated ‘Truck Art’ truck will be parking up at Fairlop Waters and unpacking a series of workshops led by Bradford artist Zareena Bano.

We will deliver a variety of activities where you can make things to give to friends and family or to sell, all which focus on a different skill or learning element. The workshops include decorating plaques, boxes, coasters, frames or enamel mugs, and you will be able to get some great photos and share your stories and experience through the artwork.

These workshops will provide a platform to bring our communities together celebrating our culture, history and heritage.

Who is this for?

From children and families to people of all ages; anyone who lives, works or studies in Redbridge. No prior experience is necessary as these workshops are designed to be fun and accessible for all skill levels.

What is the format of the workshops?

Each workshop lasts up to 2 hours and will take place outdoors right next to the truck. In the case of wet weather, we have a dry area inside. You will get to learn about truck art, take your photo with the truck itself and then learn to make an item in the truck art style.

Workshops are free to attend and all materials will be provided. Some activities are a little bit messy, so we recommend wearing clothes that you don’t mind getting marked. Wear clothing suitable for being outside.

What will I get out of it?

You will learn more about South Asian truck art and get to take part in a fun and unique activity here in Redbridge. You will enhance your creative skills and learn new techniques from the expert to make beautiful objects to give to friends and family or to sell. You will leave with some great photos and maybe some new friends.

About the Artist

Zareena is a visual artist and has worked in the arts for over eighteen years. She uses mixed media, and her work is inspired by traditional South Asian designs fused with modern and contemporary art. She also recycles and upcycles items giving them a new lease of life as sustainable pieces of artwork. She has recently completed a project on Truck Art in Bradford.

On the way to their final Friday Night Minehead Extravaganza, Harry Ham & Eddie Egg died in a horrific crash with a twenty ton truck. They were the greatest Redcoats Butlins had ever seen. Now, 50 years of purgatory later, they are ‘The Deadcoats’, two ghosts stuck in a form of light entertainment that’s deader than they are. Join them at a dilapidated resort near you, as they attempt to give their final performance at long last, and complete their unfinished business.

The Deadcoats – you don’t have to die laughing… because they’ve already done it for you.

The East London Shakespeare Festival (ELSF) merges the contemporary culture of East London with the inspirational storytelling of Shakespeare’s plays in outdoor parks and community spaces across East London. We are delighted that Much Ado About Nothing is coming to Valentines Park on Thursday 25 and Friday 26 July.

Much Ado About Nothing – Summer 2024 Tour

East London Shakespeare Festival returns with sparkling rom-com Much Ado About Nothing, with ELSF’s trademark contemporary twists and turns, high-energy party numbers and audience participation. FAMILY FRIENDLY!

This is not traditional outdoor Shakespeare – it is performed in non-theatrical community spaces, with community at its heart, seeking inspiration from the diverse cultures of East London.

ELSF aims to bring communities together in a joyful way, giving some much-needed cultural respite in ‘safe’ outdoor settings. With lots of participatory opportunities for local communities to get involved in.

A festival vibe will be encouraged with gates opening an hour before the show, so bring a picnic and why not sign up for a mask-making workshop run one of our in-house-party-goers (actors) – make your own mask and be part of the masked ball, book your tickets for pre-show mask making workshops here.

Update: Following structural inspections, our engineers have discovered RAAC concrete in the Kenneth More Theatre, which means that sadly the theatre will need to be closed for the coming months. We have had to cancel or relocate shows and events planned in this venue. We share in your disappointment that shows will not be able to go ahead including our beloved annual pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk. Ticket holders will be updated and refunds for cancelled shows will be processed automatically.
